The new curriculum requires trainees to complete either one 12 month block or two 6 month blocks from the General Duties list in preparation for independent practice.   Advanced modules are for Year ST6/7 trainees although you can apply if you are currently an ST5 but will be moving into ST6 at the next rotation and you have undertaken it at Higher first.

You will receive an application form via email.


It is most important that you read the ‘Annex E’ document written by the Royal College of Anaesthetists on Advanced Training (http://www.rcoa.ac.uk/CCT/AnnexE)

To get the most out of your Advanced year you should plan it well.

For those of you doing or planning Advanced modules Annex E is the relevant part of the curriculum to refer to. Somewhat confusingly the definition of general duties changes between higher and advanced training – for example obstetric anaesthesia is not part of general duties at advanced level. You should look carefully through the list of modules available in the contents section page E2.

In order to satisfy the curriculum, it is necessary to complete 12 months WTE of an advanced year. If general duties is to be counted as one of the modules, then it is necessary to achieve more than one of its subunits. (The wording of this requirement is on page E6 “General duties, which includes a mix of the following sub-units”)

This will not affect those doing a year of advanced training in the same major unit e.g. Pain or whose year consists of 2 major units cardiac/neuro/peri-op/obstetrics/paeds etc.

This will however require planning for those who are doing say 6 months of Obstetrics/ Paeds/ Neuro who then want to do any other advanced general duty for their remaining 6 months as it is necessary to complete more than one.

In reality a lot of these go together anyway e.g. Airway/Head and Neck or Regional/Orthopaedics.

Advanced Training Modules (ATMs)

As suggested by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (Annex E) – Advanced training has two aims:

The Northern School’s delivery of this part of the 2010 curriculum is an evolving project. Our one key aim is to make this a fair process.

Please note:

At Higher level we would expect trainees to complete 9 of the 14 units of training listed under the general duties banner before applying for an advanced module.

The Pre-hospitalEmergency Medicine (PHEM) posts – including JCUH post, are appointed nationally and we are not involved with the appointment.   If you are planning to apply for this post or for a post out of region, you MUST seek permission from the Programme Director before accepting a job.   The final decision is made by the School Executive Committee.

If you already have an Advanced ICM post then that year IS your Advanced year (or equivalent). The same applies to trainees who have been appointed to Advanced Pain / 12 months Research in JCUH/RVI.

Advanced/Chronic Pain – you will need to have discussed your plans in advance with the Regional Advisor for Pain Management.

Where we have too many applicants for the number of posts in any subspecialty, there will be competitive interviews.

Where you will go to do your module?   You are NOT guaranteed any particular location for your Advanced Training Module.   The TPD will determine who goes where.   No trainer can promise an ATM to a trainee.

Before you start your module. Once you have received notification from the TPD of your advanced module, you should think about contacting the College Tutor or Advanced Lead to discuss on-going projects, research and teaching opportunities that are taking place which you could start planning for once you start your module.


Advanced Training Module – Initial Meeting, Progress Report & Final Report

You will need to demonstrate at ARCP that you used your Advanced module to enhance your non-clinical skills in that field.   The panel will be looking at your achievements in the non-clinical domains in your chosen Advanced Module in addition to your advanced clinical skills.    This form MUST be completed with your Educational Supervisor at intervals until the end of your ATM.   The final report must be emailed to your TPD for final comments.
