The Trust

Gateshead NHS Foundation Trust, better known as QE Gateshead employs around 3,400 staff and provides 580 hospital beds, primarily within Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.  Established in 2005, the Trust was one of the first foundation trusts in the country.  Alongside a full range of hospital services, the Trust also provides breast screening services for South of Tyne, Pathology services to other local Trusts, and is the North East hub for the National Bowel Cancer and AAA Screening Programmes.

In February 2015 the Trust opened a new Emergency Care Centre (ECC) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, bringing together A&E, urgent children’s assessment unit, walk-in centre, GP services, and medical and surgical assessment units.  This has transformed the way emergency care is delivered to patients.  The ECC has been recognised for its innovative design and has recently won a prestigious development award from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

QE Gateshead consistently achieves high levels of care for patients.  A CQC inspection in September 2015 rated the Trust as “Good” overall, and “Outstanding” for caring.  Maternity services are ranked amongst the best in the country, and the Gynaecological Oncology service has built up a national and international reputation.

The Trust was recently ranked number one nationally for Foundation Training.

The Local Area

The town of Gateshead on the south bank of the River Tyne is united with the city of Newcastle on the north side of the river by seven bridges spanning a spectacular riverscape.  Once a centre for coal-mining and heavy industry, Gateshead has been transformed in recent years into a vibrant town with excellent shopping, culture and transport links.

The town is known for its architecture, including the Sage Gateshead, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts and the world-famous Angel of the North.  The Metropolitan borough of Gateshead has a population of approximately 200,000, with a mixture of urban, semi-urban and rural localities.  The Borough includes the National Trust Estate of Gibside, with its fantastic gardens and parks, and nearby Derwentside, home to the Northern Red Kites Project which has successfully reintroduced these large birds of prey.  There are many other areas of beauty, indeed more than half of the borough is made up of green-belt land or countryside.

The Borough of Gateshead is home to the MetroCentre, the biggest shopping and leisure centre in the UK and one of the largest in Europe, boasting hundreds of shops, as well as entertainment and dining.

The vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne, with its fantastic shopping, culture, entertainment and nightlife is only separated from Gateshead by the width of the River Tyne.  It’s amenities and attractions are therefore very easily accessed, with excellent transport links (both road and Metro) between the two.

Within a short drive of Gateshead there is access to the fabulous coastline, countryside and villages of Northumberland, the beautiful, historic city of Durham, and the unspoilt moorland of the Durham Dales.  There are countless opportunities for cycling and walking, with opportunities to explore Hadrian’s Wall, the Cheviot Hills and many cycle routes (including the famous Coast to Coast route).

The Anaesthetics Department

We are a friendly, welcoming department, with a strong culture of training and supporting trainees.  QE Gateshead is very popular with trainees, consistently being in the top two most popular departments in the Northern School of Anaesthesia based on trainee preferencing.  We have an excellent track record of helping trainees through their FRCA examinations.

The Anaesthetics Department, incorporating Critical Care and Pain Management consists of 28 Consultants, 5 Specialty Doctors, and approximately 20 trainees (from F2 through to ST7).  The department provides anaesthetics services for the following surgical specialties:

Perioperative Medicine

There is a wide spectrum of theatre work carried out at QE Gateshead, ranging from minor day-case procedures to complex, major gynaecological oncology operations.  There is also a large amount of orthopaedic work, both upper and lower limb, with the use of regional nerve block and catheter techniques.   This allows us to provide valuable training and experience to anaesthetics trainees from new starters, right through to ST7.

Junior trainees are well supported, with excellent in-theatre teaching and high levels of consultant-support.  Trainees are encouraged to undertake well-supported “solo” lists from an early stage, in order to develop the skills necessary for the organisation and running of theatre lists.  This is popular with trainees, who find the experience valuable and confidence-boosting.

More senior trainees can expect to gain experience in major surgery, particularly with major colorectal and gynae-oncology surgery.  The gynae-oncology surgery performed at QEGateshead is amongst the most advanced, and most extensive performed anywhere in the country.  This calls for a high level of peri-operative care from the anaesthetics team, and trainees can expect to gain experience in pre-operative assessment and optimisation of these patients, as well as managing their complex fluid and blood requirements intra-operatively.  QEGateshead also has an expanding orthopaedic department with a large amount of upper limb and lower limb work, including awake shoulder surgery.  There is therefore a large amount of experience to be gained in management of orthopaedic cases, and in particular, in nerve block techniques.

We also provide consultant-led high risk anaesthetic clinics for the assessment and optimisation of patients.  There is a full Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing service which is consultant-delivered.  Trainees coming to QEH can expect to gain experience in advanced pre-operative assessment of patients through attendance at these clinics.

Acute pain services have recently been revamped and there are ongoing developments and changes in practice.  These include the implementation of a Sufentanil PCA system, increasing use of nerve catheters for orthopaedic surgery, and the use of rectus sheath catheters for laparotomy patients.

Critical Care

Critical Care services are provided on a modern 16 bedded unit, currently staffed for seven Level 3, and six Level 2 patients.  There is a dedicated team of ten Intensivists working on Critical Care, who deliver 20 sessions of daytime cover per week and provide on-call cover out of hours.  A full range of critical care services are provided.

The Department has an active, expanding, research interest which is supported by a Research Sister. Critical Care Rehabilitation is managed by a Specialist Nurse and is supported by Health Care Assistants and Allied Health Professional. The award-winning service includes inpatient and outpatient work.

The Critical Care department is approved for Core, Intermediate, Higher and Advanced ITU training.

Following the most recent inspection, Critical Care was rated as “Good” by the CQC, with “Outstanding” for caring.

Chronic Pain

The Chronic Pain team within the Trust provide Consultant-led clinics and procedure sessions, as well as nurse-led clinics, psychology services, and a pain management programme.
