Requirements for Trainee Educational Supervision


Fully registered as a named educational supervisor by 31/7/16

Half-day/ 4 hours educational CPD annually

Undergo appraisal of educational role as part of annual appraisal process, demonstrating evidence of on-going professional development against 7 standards in each revalidation cycle:

  1. Ensuring safe and effective patient care through training
  2. Establishing and maintaining an environment for learning
  3. Teaching and facilitating learning
  4. Enhancing learning through assessment
  5. Supporting and monitoring educational progress
  6. Guiding personal and professional development
  7. Continuing professional development as an educator

Educational role and necessary CPD should be part of job planning process and its review.

Royal College

Speciality-specific requirements (refer to local College Tutor/ Royal College guidance) but usually include familiarity with appropriate curriculum, e-portfolio, career progression, exam structure, ARCP, CCT requirements.


Completed Equality and Diversity training within last 3 years (NB. Part of trust mandatory training)

Have received training covering feedback for learning, developing effective learning plans, recognising and supporting underperforming trainees, ARCP processes. (there are specific courses on the HENE website)


Meet requirements of HENE and GMC above.

Attended “Good practice in educational supervision” training course

Committed to training and supporting trainee doctors, and fully engaged in the process of educational meetings, using the relevant e-portfolio and the reporting processes.

Educational supervision time requirements should be discussed when agreeing/reviewing the job plan.
